Where to find Gravel
Riverbeds and Alluvial Fans
Commonly found in active and ancient river channels, floodplains, and alluvial fans where water flow has transported and deposited rock fragments.
Glacial Outwash Plains and Moraines
Abundant in areas that have experienced glaciation, as glaciers are powerful agents of erosion and deposition, leaving behind vast quantities of gravel in outwash plains and morainal deposits.
Coastal Environments
Found on beaches, marine terraces, and coastal plains where wave action and currents have sorted and deposited eroded material.
Quarries and Aggregate Pits
Commercially extracted from natural deposits or produced by crushing larger rocks. These sites are specifically developed for gravel production.
Collecting tips
- Look for Water-Sorted Deposits. Gravel is often found in environments where water has played a significant role in its transport and deposition. Riverbanks, dry streambeds, and coastal areas are prime locations.
- Examine Glacial Features. In glaciated regions, look for features like eskers, kames, and outwash plains, which are rich in gravel deposits.
- Check for Commercial Operations. Large-scale gravel deposits are often exploited by aggregate companies. While not for collecting, these sites indicate significant local gravel resources.
- Observe Grain Size and Roundness. Gravel is characterized by its grain size (2-64 mm) and typically rounded to sub-angular shapes, distinguishing it from finer sediments like sand or coarser materials like cobbles and boulders.
