Where to find River Pebbles
River Beds and Banks
Ubiquitous in active and ancient river systems worldwide, from small streams to large rivers. Look for them along the water's edge, in gravel bars, and exposed river terraces.
Alluvial Fans
Depositional features at the base of mountains where streams emerge from confined valleys onto flatter plains. These often contain coarse-grained sediments, including pebbles.
Glacial Outwash Plains
Areas where meltwater streams from glaciers deposit sorted sediments, including pebbles, often forming braided river systems.
Sedimentary Rock Formations (Conglomerates)
Lithified river pebbles are found within ancient sedimentary rock sequences, indicating past fluvial environments. These can be exposed in road cuts, quarries, and natural outcrops.
Collecting tips
- Look for Water-Worn Shapes. The most distinctive feature is their rounded to sub-rounded shape, indicating transport and abrasion by water. Avoid angular fragments, which are more characteristic of scree or glacial till.
- Observe Compositional Variety. River pebbles often exhibit a wide range of rock types within a single deposit, reflecting the geology of the upstream drainage basin. This diversity is a good indicator.
- Check for Sorting. While not perfectly sorted, river deposits tend to show some degree of sorting by size and density, unlike the chaotic mixture of glacial till.
- Examine the Environment. Always consider the geological context. Finding pebbles in a river bed or an ancient fluvial deposit strongly supports their identification.
