Where to find River Rocks
Riverbeds and Stream Banks
The most common location, where active fluvial processes are shaping and transporting the rocks.
Floodplains
Areas adjacent to rivers that are inundated during floods, where sediments, including river rocks, are deposited.
Alluvial Fans
Fan-shaped deposits of sediment formed where a stream emerges from a mountain front onto a flatter plain.
Terraces
Elevated, relatively flat surfaces along a river valley, representing former floodplains that have been incised by the river.
Collecting tips
- Look for Rounded Shapes. The most distinctive feature of river rocks is their smooth, rounded to sub-rounded appearance, a result of water abrasion.
- Observe the Local Geology. The types of rocks found in a river will reflect the geology of the upstream drainage basin. Knowing the regional geology can help predict what types of rocks you might find.
- Check for Stratification in Deposits. While individual river rocks are mixed, larger deposits (e.g., in terraces or floodplains) may show sedimentary structures like bedding or cross-bedding, indicating fluvial deposition.
- Consider Size Sorting. Rivers often sort sediments by size. Larger cobbles and boulders are typically found in higher energy environments (e.g., upstream, faster currents), while finer gravels and sands are found in lower energy areas.
