The most common location, found in active river channels, along their banks, and in floodplains worldwide.
Alluvial Fans
Deposits at the base of mountains where streams emerge onto flatter terrain, often containing well-rounded pebbles.
Glacial Outwash Plains
Areas where meltwater from glaciers has deposited sorted and rounded sediments, including pebbles.
Ancient Sedimentary Formations
Lithified conglomerates and ancient fluvial deposits, where pebbles are cemented together to form rock.
Collecting tips
- Look in Active Waterways. Focus on the beds and banks of rivers and streams, especially after periods of high flow which can expose new material.
- Examine Gravel Bars. Gravel bars are natural accumulations of coarser sediment, often rich in pebbles, deposited by currents.
- Check for Roundness and Smoothness. True river pebbles will exhibit a characteristic rounded and smoothed appearance due to prolonged abrasion.
- Consider Upstream Geology. The types of pebbles found can give clues about the geology of the upstream drainage basin. Look for areas with diverse rock types upstream for a greater variety of pebbles.
