Where to find Moissanite (synthetic)
Industrial Laboratories and Factories Worldwide
Synthetic moissanite is produced in specialized facilities globally, with major production centers in the United States, China, and Russia. These are not 'finding locations' in a geological sense but rather manufacturing sites.
Meteorite Impact Sites (Natural Moissanite)
Extremely rare natural moissanite has been found in minute quantities in certain meteorites (e.g., Canyon Diablo meteorite) and in some kimberlite pipes and xenoliths, but these are not commercially viable sources.
Collecting tips
- Purchase from Reputable Dealers. For gem-quality synthetic moissanite, always purchase from reputable jewelers or suppliers who provide certification of authenticity and quality.
- Distinguishing from Diamond. Moissanite has a higher refractive index and dispersion than diamond, leading to more 'fire' (rainbow flashes). It also exhibits double refraction, which can be observed by looking through the pavilion facets at a light source, where facet junctions may appear doubled. Diamond is singly refractive. Moissanite is also slightly lighter than diamond of the same size and has a higher electrical conductivity (which some diamond testers can detect).
- Industrial Applications. Industrial silicon carbide is readily available from material suppliers in various forms, including powders, grains, and manufactured components.
Quick Check
