Where to find Rainbow Moonstone
Sri Lanka
Historically a significant source of high-quality moonstone, including some material exhibiting rainbow effects, though often orthoclase-based.
India
A primary source for Rainbow Moonstone (labradorite variety), particularly from the Odisha region.
Madagascar
Known for producing various feldspar varieties, including some with adularescence/labradorescence.

Collecting tips
- Look for Mafic Igneous Rocks. Rainbow Moonstone, being a variety of labradorite, is typically found in mafic igneous rocks such as anorthosite, gabbro, and basalt. Search in areas known for these rock types.
- Examine for Adularescence/Labradorescence. The key identifying feature is the play of color. Rotate potential specimens under a light source to observe the characteristic iridescent flash of blue, green, yellow, or pink.
- Check for Cleavage. Feldspars exhibit distinct cleavage. Look for two cleavage planes intersecting at nearly 90 degrees (specifically 86° and 94° for plagioclase). This can help differentiate it from other minerals.
- Consider Associated Minerals. Rainbow Moonstone may be found alongside other feldspars, pyroxenes, amphiboles, and magnetite in its host rock.
- Safety Precautions. Rainbow Moonstone itself is not hazardous. However, when collecting in the field, always wear appropriate safety gear (gloves, eye protection) and be aware of your surroundings, especially in quarries or rocky terrains. No specific warnings regarding hazardous materials are associated with Rainbow Moonstone.
