Where to find Mudstone
Worldwide
Mudstones are among the most abundant sedimentary rocks and are found in sedimentary basins across all continents. They are common in ancient lake beds, river floodplains, deltaic sequences, and deep-sea environments.
North America
Extensive mudstone formations are found in the Appalachian Basin, Western Interior Seaway deposits, and various Cenozoic basins.
Europe
Common in Mesozoic and Cenozoic basins, such as the Paris Basin, North Sea Basin, and various Alpine foreland basins.
Asia
Widespread in sedimentary successions across China, India, and Siberia, often associated with coal and hydrocarbon deposits.
Collecting tips
- Look for fine-grained sedimentary sequences. Mudstones are typically found interbedded with other sedimentary rocks like sandstones and limestones, particularly in sequences indicating fluctuating energy levels or deeper water deposition.
- Examine outcrops in low-energy environments. River banks, lake shores, and coastal cliffs often expose mudstone layers. Look for massive, blocky, fine-grained rocks that lack obvious layering.
- Test for grittiness. A simple field test involves chewing a small, clean piece of the rock. Mudstone will feel smooth and non-gritty, whereas siltstone will feel gritty due to the presence of larger silt particles.
- Observe weathering patterns. Mudstones can weather into blocky fragments or rounded shapes, and their surfaces may show evidence of past bioturbation (trace fossils).
