Unidentifiable Rock occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Collecting tips

1. Seek Expert Opinion. If you encounter a rock you cannot identify, consult with a professional geologist, mineralogist, or a reputable geological society. They can provide guidance or perform tests.
2. Document Context. Always record the precise location (GPS coordinates), geological setting (e.g., outcrop, riverbed, mine dump), and associated rocks or minerals when collecting a specimen. This context is crucial for identification.
3. Perform Basic Field Tests. Even for an unidentifiable rock, basic field tests like hardness (Mohs scale), streak, reaction to acid (HCl), specific gravity estimation, and magnetism can provide initial clues.
4. Photograph Thoroughly. Take clear, well-lit photographs from multiple angles, including close-ups of texture, crystal forms (if any), and any unique features. Include a scale bar or common object for size reference.
5. Consider Laboratory Analysis. For truly unidentifiable specimens, laboratory techniques such as X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS), or thin section analysis may be required for definitive identification.
