Collecting tips
- Look for Hydrothermal Veins. Gold in quartz is almost exclusively found in hydrothermal vein systems. Search for areas with exposed quartz veins, especially those showing signs of alteration or mineralization.
- Check Old Mine Dumps. Abandoned gold mines and their associated waste rock piles (dumps) can be excellent places to find specimens, as miners often discarded lower-grade material or pieces that were difficult to process.
- Pan for Placer Gold. While not 'gold in quartz' directly, finding placer gold in streams can indicate a nearby lode source. Following the gold 'upstream' can lead to the primary quartz veins.
- Use a Metal Detector. For larger gold inclusions, a metal detector can be effective, especially in areas known for gold-quartz mineralization. However, small, disseminated gold may not be detectable.
- Examine Quartz Closely. Gold can be very fine and easily overlooked. Examine quartz specimens under good lighting, and consider breaking open larger pieces to reveal internal gold.
