Where is Native Metal found?

Native Metal occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Collecting tips

1. Placer Deposits. For gold and platinum, search in stream beds, gravel bars, and ancient river channels where heavy minerals accumulate. Panning and sluicing are common methods.
2. Hydrothermal Veins. Look for quartz veins or other gangue minerals in areas with past or present volcanic/hydrothermal activity. Native metals can be disseminated or form visible masses within these veins.
3. Igneous Intrusions. In areas with ultramafic or mafic igneous rocks, particularly layered intrusions, native platinum group elements can be found. Copper can also occur in basaltic flows.
4. Metal Detectors. For larger nuggets or masses of native gold, silver, or copper, metal detectors can be highly effective, especially in known mineralized areas.
5. Examine Old Mine Dumps. Previous mining operations may have overlooked smaller specimens or left behind material that is now accessible.
