Where is Schiller Obsidian found?

Schiller Obsidian occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Collecting tips

1. Look in Volcanic Regions. Focus on areas with recent (Cenozoic) felsic volcanic activity, especially near rhyolitic lava flows or domes.
2. Examine Outcrops Carefully. Obsidian often forms in the rapidly cooled margins of lava flows. Look for glassy, dark rocks. The schiller effect may not be immediately obvious and requires proper lighting.
3. Check for Conchoidal Fracture. Freshly broken obsidian will exhibit sharp, curved, shell-like fracture surfaces, a key identifying feature.
4. Use a Light Source. To observe the schiller, rotate potential samples under direct sunlight or a strong artificial light source. The iridescent colors will 'flash' as the angle changes.
5. Safety Precautions. Obsidian edges are extremely sharp. Handle with care, and consider wearing gloves. Be aware of unstable terrain in volcanic areas.
