Where to find Ocean Jasper
Marovato, Madagascar
The primary and historically significant source, located on the remote northwest coast of Madagascar. This deposit was discovered in 1999 and is characterized by material found in coastal caves accessible only at low tide.
Kabamby, Madagascar
A second, more recently discovered deposit (around 2006) located further inland from Marovato. Material from Kabamby often exhibits larger orbs and a slightly different color palette, including more vibrant yellows and reds, and is mined from open pits.
Collecting tips
- Location Specificity. Ocean Jasper is exclusively found in Madagascar. Any material marketed as 'Ocean Jasper' from other locations is misidentified.
- Orbicular Patterns. The defining characteristic is the presence of distinct, often multicolored, spherical or 'orb' patterns. Absence of these patterns suggests it is not Ocean Jasper.
- Color and Luster. Look for a wide range of colors and a vitreous to waxy luster when polished. Unpolished specimens will appear duller.
- Hardness Test (Caution). As a variety of quartz, it should scratch glass (Mohs hardness 7). This test should be performed carefully on an inconspicuous area if necessary, as it can damage the specimen.
