Where to find Ocean Jasper
Marovato, Madagascar
The primary and original source of Ocean Jasper, discovered in 1999. This deposit is located along the coastline and is only accessible by boat during low tide. The material is found in veins and nodules within rhyolitic volcanic flows.
Kabamby, Madagascar
A second, distinct deposit discovered in 2006, located further inland from Marovato. This material often exhibits larger orbs and a slightly different color palette, including more vibrant yellows and reds. It is also found within volcanic formations.
Collecting tips
- Location Specificity. Ocean Jasper is exclusively found in specific coastal and inland areas of Madagascar. Any material marketed as 'Ocean Jasper' from other locations is misidentified.
- Orbicular Patterns. The most definitive characteristic is the presence of distinct, often multi-colored, spherical or orbicular patterns. Absence of these patterns suggests it is not Ocean Jasper.
- Hardness Test. As a variety of quartz, it should scratch glass (Mohs hardness 7). This helps differentiate it from softer imitations.
- Luster and Fracture. Observe the waxy to vitreous luster and conchoidal to splintery fracture typical of chalcedony.
