Where is Native Lead found?

Native Lead occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Collecting tips

1. Look for associated minerals. Native lead is often found in association with other lead minerals like galena, cerussite, and anglesite, or with other native metals in highly reduced environments.
2. Check for high density. Lead is exceptionally dense (specific gravity ~11.3), which is a key characteristic for identification, even in small samples.
3. Test for softness and malleability. Its extreme softness (Mohs 1.5) and malleability are distinctive. It can be easily cut with a knife and will deform rather than break.
4. Observe tarnish. The rapid tarnishing from silvery-blue to dull gray/black is a good indicator, though other metals also tarnish.
5. Safety Precautions. Lead is a toxic heavy metal. Avoid direct skin contact, especially if handling frequently. Do not ingest or inhale dust. Always wash hands thoroughly after handling. Store samples securely to prevent access by children or pets. For cutting or grinding, use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves and respiratory protection in a well-ventilated area to prevent lead dust inhalation.
