Where to find Amethyst and Sodalite
Amethyst: Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul), Uruguay, Zambia, Russia (Ural Mountains), Canada (Thunder Bay), USA (Arizona, North Carolina)
Brazil and Uruguay are famous for large amethyst geodes. Zambia produces high-quality, dark amethyst. The Ural Mountains in Russia are known for deep purple, often bi-colored amethyst.
Sodalite: Brazil (Bahia), Canada (Bancroft, Ontario), Namibia, Greenland, Russia (Kola Peninsula), USA (Arkansas, Maine)
Bancroft, Ontario, Canada, is a well-known locality for large sodalite deposits. Brazil and Namibia also produce significant quantities of gem-quality sodalite.
Collecting tips
- Amethyst Geodes. Look for vugs or cavities in volcanic rocks, especially basalts, which can host amethyst geodes. In some areas, amethyst is found in hydrothermal veins.
- Sodalite in Alkaline Igneous Rocks. Search for sodalite in outcrops of nepheline syenites and other alkaline igneous rocks. It often occurs with other feldspathoids and alkali feldspars. Look for its characteristic blue color against lighter host rock.
- UV Light for Sodalite. Some sodalite (especially hackmanite, a variety of sodalite) exhibits tenebrescence (changes color in UV light) or fluorescence, which can aid in identification in the field.
- Hardness Test. Amethyst (Quartz) is significantly harder (Mohs 7) than Sodalite (Mohs 5.5-6). This can be a key differentiator if you have both minerals and a hardness testing kit.
