Where is Green Aventurine found?

Green Aventurine occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Collecting tips

1. Look for Metamorphic Terrains. Focus your search in regions known for metamorphic rock formations, particularly those containing schists and gneisses. Aventurine is often found in association with these rock types.
2. Identify Aventurescence. The key identifying feature is the sparkling or shimmering effect (aventurescence). Rotate the sample under a light source to observe this characteristic play of light from the mica inclusions.
3. Check for Hardness. As a variety of quartz, green aventurine will be relatively hard (Mohs 7). It will scratch glass and steel. This helps differentiate it from softer green minerals.
4. Observe Color and Inclusions. Note the green color, which can range from pale to deep, and look for the tiny, reflective mica flakes embedded within the quartz matrix. These are typically fuchsitic mica.
5. Examine Fracture. Quartz exhibits a conchoidal (shell-like) fracture, which is a good indicator. It will not show cleavage planes.
