Where to find Quartz with Mica
Appalachian Mountains, USA
Extensive metamorphic terrains with abundant schists and gneisses containing quartz and mica.
Himalayan Orogen, Asia
High-grade metamorphic rocks, including schists and gneisses, rich in quartz and various micas.
Brazilian Shield, Brazil
Ancient cratonic areas with granitic intrusions and metamorphic belts.
Fennoscandian Shield, Scandinavia
Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks, including granites and gneisses.
Many active and ancient mountain belts worldwide
Wherever regional metamorphism or granitic intrusions have occurred, quartz and mica are common constituents.
Collecting tips
- Look for Foliation. In metamorphic rocks, the alignment of mica flakes often creates a distinct foliation (schistosity or gneissic banding), which can be a key indicator.
- Identify Quartz Grains. Look for hard, glassy, often anhedral grains that scratch glass. They will not show cleavage.
- Identify Mica Flakes. Search for shiny, platy minerals that can be easily peeled into thin sheets. Muscovite is light-colored, Biotite is dark.
- Examine Granitic Rocks. Many granites contain visible crystals of quartz, feldspar, and mica (often biotite).
- Check Pegmatites. These coarse-grained igneous rocks often contain large crystals of quartz and mica, sometimes in significant quantities.
Quick Check
- Color:
- Variable (colorless, white, gray for quartz; silvery-white to black for mica)
- Luster:
- Vitreous (quartz), Pearly to Vitreous (mica)
- Streak:
- White (for both quartz and most micas)
