Where to find Rose Quartz
Minas Gerais, Brazil
One of the most significant sources of high-quality massive rose quartz, often found in large quantities within pegmatite deposits.
South Dakota, USA
Known for its distinctive, often deeply colored rose quartz, particularly from the Black Hills region, associated with pegmatites.
Madagascar
Produces fine-quality rose quartz, including some of the rare euhedral crystal forms, often found in pegmatitic occurrences.
Namibia
Another important source of massive rose quartz, often with good color saturation.
India
Various localities produce rose quartz, typically from pegmatite and hydrothermal vein environments.
Collecting tips
- Look in Pegmatites. Focus your search on granitic pegmatite dikes, especially in the core or intermediate zones, where rose quartz often forms alongside other pegmatite minerals like feldspar, mica, and tourmaline.
- Hydrothermal Veins. Explore quartz-rich hydrothermal veins, particularly those associated with granitic intrusions, as these can also host rose quartz.
- Check Alluvial Deposits. Riverbeds and gravel deposits downstream from known pegmatite or hydrothermal occurrences can contain water-worn pebbles and cobbles of rose quartz.
- Observe Color and Luster. Identify the characteristic pink color and vitreous to greasy luster. Be aware that the color can vary from very pale to deep rose.
- Test Hardness. Rose quartz will scratch glass and steel (Mohs hardness 7), which helps distinguish it from softer pink minerals.
