Where to find Aventurine Quartz
India (especially Mysore and Chennai)
One of the primary sources of green aventurine, particularly high-quality material with strong aventurescence.
Brazil
Significant deposits of green and other colored aventurine.
Russia (Ural Mountains)
Historically known for aventurine, particularly a reddish-brown variety.
Austria
Known for some historical occurrences.
Tanzania
Newer sources have been identified.
United States (e.g., North Carolina, Vermont)
Smaller occurrences, often associated with metamorphic belts.
Collecting tips
- Look for Metamorphic Terrains. Aventurine Quartz is a product of metamorphism. Search in areas known for greenschist facies metamorphic rocks, such as ancient mountain belts or shield areas.
- Identify Quartz-Rich Rocks. The protolith for aventurine is typically quartz-rich. Look for outcrops of quartzite, meta-sandstone, or quartz veins within metamorphic sequences.
- Observe for Aventurescence. The most distinctive feature is the shimmering effect. Rotate suspected samples under a light source to check for the characteristic sparkle caused by mica inclusions.
- Check for Green Coloration. While other colors exist, green is the most common. Look for translucent green rocks with a granular texture.
- Field Identification. Aventurine Quartz will scratch glass (Mohs hardness 7) and will not react to dilute hydrochloric acid. The presence of small, reflective flakes (mica) within a quartz matrix is a strong indicator.
