Blue Quartz occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Collecting tips

1. Look for Quartz Habit. Search for areas known for quartz mineralization, such as pegmatites, hydrothermal veins, or metamorphic terrains. Blue quartz will often occur alongside other quartz varieties.
2. Examine Color and Inclusions. The blue color is key. Look for a distinct blue hue within otherwise clear or milky quartz. Use a hand lens to identify the fibrous or granular nature of the inclusions, which differentiates it from intrinsically colored blue minerals.
3. Check Hardness. Quartz is relatively hard (7 on Mohs scale). It will scratch glass and steel. This helps distinguish it from softer blue minerals like sodalite or lazurite.
4. Consider Geological Context. Research the specific geology of a region. If dumortierite or magnesioriebeckite are known to occur in the area, there's a higher chance of finding blue quartz with these inclusions.
