Where to find Green Quartz
Brazil
Significant source of both Aventurine and Prasiolite (both natural and heat-treated). Minas Gerais is a key region.
India
A major source of green Aventurine, particularly from the Mysore region.
Russia
Ural Mountains are known for high-quality green Aventurine.
United States
Sources of Aventurine in various states, including Oregon and Colorado. Natural Prasiolite has been found in certain localities.
Canada
Some occurrences of Aventurine.
Poland
Known for natural Prasiolite (from the Lower Silesia region).
Collecting tips
- Look for Metamorphic Terrains. For Aventurine, focus on areas with schists and gneisses, especially those rich in mica. Hydrothermal vein systems within these terrains are also promising.
- Identify Quartz Deposits. Since both are varieties of quartz, search for quartz-rich environments. For Prasiolite, look for areas known for amethyst, as it can be a precursor.
- Observe Color and Luster. Distinguish Aventurine by its characteristic green color and aventurescence (sparkle). Prasiolite will have a more uniform green and vitreous luster.
- Check for Inclusions. Aventurine's green color and sparkle are due to mineral inclusions (fuchsite, chlorite). Examine samples closely for these platy inclusions.
- Hardness Test. Both varieties will scratch glass (Mohs hardness 7), which helps differentiate them from softer green minerals.
