- Look for Metamorphic Terranes. Focus your search on regions known for regional metamorphism, such as ancient mountain belts, shield areas, and exposed cratons.
- Identify Quartzite First. Look for hard, dense, light-colored rocks that scratch glass and have a sugary or granular texture. Then, examine closely for embedded reddish crystals.
- Examine Outcrops and Road Cuts. Freshly exposed rock faces often provide the best views of mineralogy and texture. Look for distinct garnet crystals within the quartz matrix.
