Rhyolite occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Where to find Rhyolite

Yellowstone National Park, USA

Extensive rhyolitic lava flows and tuffs associated with the Yellowstone Caldera, a supervolcano.

New Zealand

Taupo Volcanic Zone features numerous rhyolitic volcanoes, domes, and ignimbrite deposits.

Iceland

While predominantly basaltic, some central volcanoes in Iceland, particularly in the eastern volcanic zone, produce rhyolitic lavas.

Andes Mountains, South America

Many stratovolcanoes along the Andean arc erupt rhyolitic to dacitic lavas.

Japan

Numerous volcanic complexes, particularly in subduction zones, exhibit rhyolitic volcanism.

Collecting tips

  1. Look for Volcanic Terrains. Rhyolite is an extrusive igneous rock, so search in areas with past or present volcanic activity, especially those associated with continental crust.
  2. Identify Light Colors and Fine Grains. Rhyolite is typically light-colored and has a very fine-grained groundmass. Look for porphyritic textures where larger crystals are visible within this fine matrix.
  3. Check for Flow Bands or Vesicles. Flow banding (parallel layers indicating lava flow) or vesicles (small holes from trapped gas) are common features that can help identify rhyolite.
  4. Consider Associated Rocks. Rhyolite often occurs with other felsic volcanic rocks like obsidian, pumice, and various tuffs (welded or unwelded pyroclastic deposits).
  5. Examine Outcrops for Domes and Flows. Rhyolite forms viscous lava flows and domes, which can create distinctive geological structures. Look for these forms in volcanic landscapes.
