Lichen-covered rocks are found globally in virtually all terrestrial environments where rock surfaces are exposed, including arctic tundras, alpine regions, temperate forests, deserts, and coastal areas. Specific lichen species are adapted to particular climatic zones and rock types.
Collecting tips
- Observe exposed rock surfaces. Look for any rock outcrop, boulder, or stone wall that has been exposed to the elements for a significant period. Lichens are primary colonizers and will often be present.
- Note color and texture variations. The presence of patches of distinct colors (greens, yellows, grays) and textures (crusty, leafy, bushy) on a rock surface is a strong indicator of lichen growth.
- Distinguish from mosses or algae. Lichens are typically more tightly adhered to the rock surface than mosses, which have distinct stems and leaves. Algae often appear as a slimy or powdery green film, whereas lichens have more defined structures.
- Consider environmental factors. Lichens thrive in areas with good air quality and sufficient moisture, though some species are highly drought-tolerant. They are less common in heavily polluted urban areas.
