Where to find Iron-stained rock
Weathered outcrops
Any exposed rock surface that has undergone prolonged weathering, especially in areas with iron-bearing minerals. Look for reddish or yellowish discoloration.
Gossans
The oxidized, weathered cap of a sulfide ore deposit. These are typically intensely iron-stained (often 'rusty') and can indicate underlying mineralization.
Lateritic soils
Tropical and subtropical regions with intense chemical weathering often produce thick, iron-rich soils and saprolites that are deeply red or brown.
Sedimentary basins
Many sandstones and shales, particularly those formed in continental or shallow marine oxidizing environments, exhibit pervasive iron staining (e.g., 'red beds').
Collecting tips
- Look for color anomalies. Unusual reddish, yellowish, or brownish discoloration on rock surfaces or within rock fractures often indicates iron staining. Compare with fresh rock surfaces if possible.
- Check for streak. Rubbing the stained rock on an unglazed porcelain streak plate can reveal the characteristic streak of the iron oxide: red-brown for hematite, yellow-brown for goethite/limonite.
- Consider the geological context. Iron staining is common in areas of active weathering, near fault zones (where fluids can circulate), or associated with sulfide mineralization.
- Observe texture and distribution. Note whether the staining is a surface coating, fills fractures, or is disseminated throughout the rock matrix. This can provide clues about its origin.
