Where to find Iron-rich Sandstone

Extensive exposures of iron-rich sandstones, such as the Navajo Sandstone and Entrada Sandstone, are responsible for the iconic red rock landscapes of Utah, Arizona, and Colorado.

Significant occurrences, particularly in the Hamersley Basin, where some iron-rich sandstones are associated with banded iron formations.

Collecting tips
- Look for Reddish Hues. The most obvious indicator is the characteristic red, orange, or brown coloration. This color is often more pronounced on weathered surfaces.
- Examine Grain Size and Texture. Confirm it's a sandstone by observing sand-sized grains. The gritty feel is a good indicator. The iron cement may make it feel harder than typical sandstone.
- Check for Hardness. Iron-cemented sandstones are often harder than those cemented by calcite or clay. Test with a steel knife; quartz grains will scratch steel, but the cement may not.
- Observe Geological Context. Look for it in sedimentary sequences, often interbedded with other sandstones, shales, or conglomerates. It's common in ancient riverbeds, desert dunes, and shallow marine deposits.
