Where to find Graphitic Sandstone

Graphitic sandstones can be found in various parts of the Appalachian orogen, particularly in areas that have undergone low-grade metamorphism, where organic-rich sediments were transformed.
Eastern Australia
Regions with ancient sedimentary basins and subsequent metamorphic events, such as parts of the Lachlan Fold Belt, may contain graphitic sandstones.
Scandinavia
Areas with Precambrian metasedimentary sequences, particularly those associated with graphite deposits, can host graphitic sandstones.

Collecting tips
- Look for Dark Coloration. Graphite imparts a distinct dark gray to black color. Look for sandstones that are unusually dark for their typical composition.
- Check for Greasy Feel and Luster. Graphite has a characteristic greasy feel and a sub-metallic to metallic luster. Rubbing a finger across a fresh surface might reveal these properties, or a magnifying glass can help identify individual flakes.
- Observe Streak. Graphite produces a black streak. If you can scratch a small amount of the dark material onto an unglazed porcelain plate, a black streak will confirm the presence of graphite.
- Consider Geological Context. Graphitic sandstones are typically found in regions that have experienced low-grade metamorphism of organic-rich sedimentary rocks. Look for them in areas mapped as metasedimentary sequences.
