- Examine Outcrops in Arid/Semi-Arid Regions. These rocks are particularly well-exposed and visually striking in arid and semi-arid regions where erosion has sculpted them into distinctive landforms.
- Check for Iron Staining. Even if the primary rock is not entirely red, look for localized reddish-brown or yellowish staining, which indicates the presence of iron oxides.
- Consider Associated Minerals. While not always present, look for associated iron-bearing minerals in the surrounding geology, which could be the source of the iron in the sandstone.
