- Look for granular rocks. Tafoni are most commonly found in sandstones, but also in granites and other coarse-grained igneous or metamorphic rocks.
- Exposed rock faces. Search on cliffs, large boulders, and rock outcrops that are exposed to the elements, especially in arid, semi-arid, or coastal regions.
- Observe weathering patterns. Look for concave hollows, pits, and honeycomb-like structures on rock surfaces. The interiors are often smoother than the surrounding rock.
- Consider environmental factors. Areas with significant temperature fluctuations, salt spray (coastal), or freeze-thaw cycles are conducive to tafoni formation.
