Where to find Scoria
Hawaii, USA
Abundant in volcanic fields, particularly around Kilauea and Mauna Loa, where basaltic eruptions are common.
Canary Islands, Spain
Numerous volcanic islands with active and dormant volcanoes, producing significant scoria deposits.
Iceland
A highly active volcanic island with frequent basaltic eruptions, leading to widespread scoria formation.
Cascades Volcanic Arc, USA
Volcanoes like Mount St. Helens and Mount Hood have produced scoria during explosive eruptions.
Italy
Regions around Vesuvius, Etna, and Stromboli are rich in scoria deposits from historical and ongoing volcanic activity.
Collecting tips
- Look for Volcanic Regions. Scoria is exclusively found in areas of recent or active volcanism. Focus your search around cinder cones, volcanic craters, and the margins of basaltic lava flows.
- Identify Vesicular Texture. The most distinctive feature is its highly porous, 'bubbly' texture. Look for rocks with numerous, often irregular, holes.
- Check for Dark Color. Scoria is typically dark (black, dark brown, reddish-brown). Lighter-colored, highly vesicular rocks are more likely to be pumice.
- Assess Density. While porous, scoria is generally denser than pumice and will sink in water, whereas pumice typically floats. This is a key differentiator.
- Examine for Phenocrysts. Occasionally, small, dark phenocrysts of olivine or pyroxene may be visible within the dark, vesicular matrix, indicating a mafic composition.
Quick Check
- Color:
- Dark (black, dark brown, reddish-brown)
- Luster:
- Dull to earthy
- Streak:
- Gray to brownish-gray (difficult to obtain due to porosity)
