- Check Active Waterways. Riverbeds, stream banks, and gravel bars are prime locations. The constant movement of water and sediment ensures rounding.
- Observe Local Geology. The types of rocks found as river clasts will reflect the geology of the upstream drainage basin. Knowing the regional geology can help predict the composition of river rocks.
- Examine for Durability. River rocks are typically composed of durable materials like chert, quartzite, and fine-grained igneous rocks because softer rocks would have been broken down into sand or silt.
