River Beds and Banks
Commonly found in active river channels, point bars, and floodplains where water flow is sufficient to transport and round clasts.
Beaches and Coastal Areas
Abundant on wave-swept beaches, particularly storm beaches, and in coastal marine terraces where wave action sorts and rounds sediment.
Glacial Deposits
Found in moraines, outwash plains, and eskers, often poorly sorted and sometimes sub-angular to sub-rounded due to glacial transport.
Alluvial Fans
Deposited at the base of mountains where streams emerge from confined valleys onto flatter terrain, forming fan-shaped deposits.
Sedimentary Rock Outcrops
Can be observed as components within conglomerate or breccia outcrops, representing ancient pebble deposits.
Collecting tips
- Look for Water-Worn Surfaces. Pebbles are characterized by their rounded or sub-rounded shapes, indicating significant transport and abrasion. Look for smooth, water-worn surfaces.
- Check Size Range. By definition, pebbles fall within the 4 mm to 64 mm size range. Use a ruler or a known object for comparison if precise identification is needed.
- Observe Compositional Variety. Pebbles often represent a mix of different rock types, reflecting the geology of the source area. This can be a clue to their origin.
- Consider the Environment. Pebbles are typically found in high-energy sedimentary environments where clasts are transported and abraded, such as rivers, beaches, and glacial areas.
