Where to find Pebbles
Riverbeds and Stream Beds
Commonly found in active river channels, along banks, and in floodplains where water flow has transported and rounded rock fragments.
Beaches and Coastal Areas
Abundant on shorelines where wave action continuously abrades and sorts rock fragments.
Glacial Deposits
Found in moraines, outwash plains, and till deposits, often less rounded than fluvial or marine pebbles due to different transport mechanisms.
Alluvial Fans
Deposits at the base of mountains where streams emerge from confined channels onto flatter plains, often containing a mix of angular to sub-rounded clasts.
Sedimentary Rock Outcrops
Can be observed as components within conglomerate and breccia formations, representing ancient pebble deposits that have been lithified.
Collecting tips
- Look in Active Waterways. Riverbeds, stream banks, and beaches are prime locations for finding well-rounded and diverse pebbles.
- Examine Sedimentary Layers. In geological outcrops, look for conglomerate layers, which are lithified pebble deposits.
- Observe Glacial Features. Moraines and outwash plains can yield pebbles, though they might be less perfectly rounded.
- Consider Local Geology. The types of pebbles found will reflect the bedrock geology of the upstream or nearby source areas.
