The most common location to find river rock, particularly in mountainous and hilly regions where erosion and transport are active.

Collecting tips
- Look for Water-Worn Shapes. The defining characteristic of river rock is its rounded to sub-rounded shape, indicative of fluvial transport and abrasion. Avoid angular, sharp-edged rocks.
- Examine the Local Geology. Understanding the geology of the surrounding area can help predict the types of rocks you might find in a river. For example, a river flowing through a granite batholith will likely yield granite river rocks.
- Check Different River Sections. The size and type of river rock can vary along the length of a river. Upstream sections may have larger, less rounded clasts, while downstream sections tend to have smaller, more well-rounded material.
