Where to find River Rock
Riverbeds and Stream Channels
The most common location, where active transport and deposition occur. Look for areas with strong currents or past flood events.
Floodplains and Terraces
Areas adjacent to rivers that are periodically inundated, or elevated former floodplains, often contain older river rock deposits.
Alluvial Fans and Deltas
Depositional environments where rivers lose energy and spread out, accumulating large quantities of sediment, including rounded clasts.
Quarries and Gravel Pits
Commercial operations often extract river rock from ancient or modern fluvial deposits for construction and landscaping purposes.
Collecting tips
- Observe Roundness. The degree of roundness is a key indicator. Well-rounded clasts suggest significant transport distance and duration in a fluvial environment.
- Check for Sorting. River deposits often exhibit some degree of sorting by size, with larger clasts deposited in higher energy environments and finer sediments in lower energy areas.
- Examine Composition. While variable, the composition can provide clues about the upstream geology. A diverse mix of rock types is common in large river systems.
- Look for Water-Worn Features. Beyond general smoothness, look for percussion marks, striations, or pitting that can result from clast-on-clast impact during transport.

- Highly variable, often muted or earthy tones.
- Luster:
- Dull to earthy, sometimes vitreous.
- Streak:
- Not applicable to the rock as a whole; streak would vary based on the individual mineral components.
