Where is River Rock found?
Sedimentary or Metamorphic Rock (likely sandstone or argillite with quartz veins)

Where to find River Rock
Active Riverbeds and Banks
Globally, in any active river or stream channel, especially in mountainous or hilly regions where erosion is active.
Alluvial Fans
At the base of mountains where streams emerge onto flatter plains, depositing coarse sediment.
Terraces and Floodplains
Elevated areas adjacent to rivers, representing older river deposits.
Quarries and Gravel Pits
Commercial operations extracting sand and gravel from ancient or modern fluvial deposits.
Collecting tips
- Look for Rounded Shapes. The most distinctive feature of river rock is its rounded, smoothed shape, a result of prolonged abrasion during transport.
- Examine the Surface Texture. Feel the surface; it should be smooth to the touch, unlike freshly broken or angular rock fragments.
- Observe the Local Geology. The composition of river rocks will reflect the geology of the upstream drainage basin. If sandstone and argillite with quartz veins are common in the region, you are more likely to find river rocks derived from these sources.
- Check for Quartz Veins. If the parent rock is argillite with quartz veins, the more resistant quartz veins will often stand out as lighter, harder bands or irregular networks within the darker, finer-grained argillite clast.
Quick Check
- Color:
- Variable (white, gray, tan, red, brown, black, greenish-gray)
- Luster:
- Dull to vitreous
- Streak:
- Not applicable for a rock; individual minerals within the rock would have a streak (e.g., quartz has no streak, argillite would be white to light gray).
