Where to find Pebble
Riverbeds and Stream Channels
Commonly found in active river and stream beds where water flow is sufficient to transport and abrade rock fragments.
Beaches and Coastal Zones
Abundant on beaches, particularly shingle beaches, where wave action sorts and rounds sediment.
Alluvial Fans
Deposits at the base of mountains where streams emerge from confined valleys onto flatter plains, often containing coarse sediments including pebbles.
Glacial Outwash Plains
Areas downstream from glaciers where meltwater streams deposit sorted sediments, including pebbles.
Sedimentary Rock Outcrops
Pebbles can be found as components within consolidated sedimentary rocks like conglomerates, exposed in road cuts, cliffs, and quarries.
Collecting tips
- Look for Water-Worn Areas. Pebbles are most commonly found in environments where water has been a significant agent of transport and erosion, such as rivers, lakeshores, and coastlines.
- Examine Sedimentary Layers. In geological outcrops, look for layers of conglomerate, which are lithified pebble deposits. These often stand out due to their coarse texture.
- Check Construction Sites. Pebbles are often used as aggregate, so construction sites or areas where fill dirt is being used may contain them.
- Consider Source Rock. The type of pebble (e.g., basalt, chert) can give clues about the geology of the upstream or nearby areas where the parent rock originated.
