Riverbeds and Stream Channels
Commonly found in active and ancient river systems where water flow is strong enough to transport and abrade rock fragments.
Beaches and Coastal Areas
Wave action effectively rounds rock fragments, leading to abundant pebble deposits along shorelines.
Glacial Outwash Plains and Moraines
Glaciers transport and deposit vast quantities of rock debris, which can be subsequently rounded by meltwater streams.
Alluvial Fans
Deposits at the base of mountains where streams emerge from confined valleys onto flatter plains, often containing coarse sediments including pebbles.

Collecting tips
- Look in Waterways. Rivers, streams, and beaches are prime locations for finding well-rounded pebbles. Look for areas with strong currents or wave action.
- Examine Gravel Deposits. Construction sites, gravel pits, and road cuts often expose large quantities of gravel, which includes pebbles.
- Check for Source Rocks. The composition of pebbles in an area can indicate the types of bedrock upstream or in nearby uplands. For specific types of pebbles (e.g., limestone or sandstone), look in regions with those bedrock types.
- Observe Roundness and Size. Pebbles are defined by their size (4-64 mm) and degree of rounding. Highly rounded pebbles indicate significant transport and abrasion.
