Active River Channels
Present in the beds and along the banks of virtually all rivers and streams globally, particularly in mountainous and hilly regions where erosion and transport are active.
Alluvial Fans and Floodplains
Deposits of river rock accumulate at the mouths of canyons (alluvial fans) and in broad, flat areas adjacent to rivers (floodplains) during flood events.
Terrace Deposits
Elevated, abandoned riverbeds (terraces) often contain older deposits of river rock, indicating past river levels and courses.
Quarries and Gravel Pits
Commercial operations often extract river rock from ancient or modern fluvial deposits for construction and landscaping purposes.
Collecting tips
- Look for Rounded Shapes. The most distinctive feature of river rock is its smooth, rounded, or sub-rounded shape, indicative of water transport and abrasion.
- Observe the Environment. Naturally occurring river rock will always be found in or near present or past fluvial environments (rivers, streams, floodplains, terraces).
- Check for Sorting. While river rock can be poorly sorted, well-sorted deposits (where rocks are of similar size) often indicate sustained fluvial energy.
- Examine Composition. Note the variety of rock types present. A diverse composition suggests a large drainage basin with varied geology, while a monomictic composition points to a more localized source.
