Collecting tips
- Look for Water-Worn Shapes. The most distinctive feature is the rounded, smoothed shape. Avoid angular, sharp-edged rocks, which are typically not river rocks.
- Check for Polish. Many river rocks, especially those from active channels, will have a subtle polish or sheen from continuous water abrasion.
- Consider the Local Geology. The types of rocks found in a river will reflect the geology of the upstream area. Knowing the regional geology can help predict the composition of river rocks.
- Safety Precautions. When collecting from active riverbeds, be aware of water currents, slippery surfaces, and potential for flash floods. Always obtain permission if collecting on private land.
