Collecting tips
- Look for Reddish Hues. The most obvious indicator is the characteristic red, orange, brown, or yellow coloration. This color is often more pronounced on weathered surfaces.
- Examine Grain Size and Texture. Confirm it's a sandstone by observing individual sand grains (gritty feel). The iron cement will bind these grains together.
- Check for Hardness. Iron-cemented sandstones can be quite hard and resistant to scratching, especially compared to poorly cemented sandstones. However, some can be friable.
- Observe Outcrop Patterns. Iron-rich sandstones often form prominent cliffs, mesas, and buttes due to their resistance to erosion, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions.
