Ubiquitous in active river and stream systems worldwide, particularly in mountainous and hilly regions where erosion and transport are significant.

Collecting tips
- Look for Water-Worn Shapes. The most distinctive feature is the smooth, rounded to sub-rounded shape, indicative of prolonged water transport and abrasion.
- Observe Compositional Variety. River rock often consists of a mix of different rock types, reflecting the diverse geology of the upstream drainage basin. Look for variations in color, texture, and mineralogy within a single deposit.
- Check for Stratification (in consolidated forms). If the river rock is part of a consolidated sedimentary unit (conglomerate), look for bedding planes or stratification, which indicate depositional layers.
- Consider the Local Geology. The types of rocks found as river rock will generally correspond to the bedrock geology of the surrounding region. For example, a river flowing through a granite batholith will likely carry granite river rocks.
