Hamersley Basin, Western Australia
Home to some of the world's largest and richest Banded Iron Formations (BIFs), dating back to the Paleoproterozoic Era. Major iron ore mining region.

Collecting tips
- Look for Banding. Many iron-rich cherts, especially BIFs, exhibit distinct alternating layers of iron oxides and silica. This banding is a key identifier.
- Check for Hardness. Chert is very hard (Mohs 7), so it will scratch glass and cannot be scratched by a steel knife. This distinguishes it from softer iron-rich sedimentary rocks.
- Observe Fracture. A conchoidal (shell-like) fracture is characteristic of chert and other cryptocrystalline silica materials.
- Assess Color and Streak. The red, brown, or black colors are indicative of iron oxides. A reddish-brown streak (for hematite-rich varieties) or a black streak (for magnetite-rich varieties) can help confirm the iron content.
- Geological Context. Search in areas known for Precambrian sedimentary sequences, particularly those associated with ancient marine environments and iron ore deposits.
