Collecting tips
- Look for Exposed Sandstone. Search in areas with exposed sandstone outcrops, especially those showing signs of weathering and groundwater percolation, such as cliff faces, riverbeds, and road cuts.
- Examine Fracture Surfaces and Bedding Planes. Dendrites often form along these surfaces where fluids can easily penetrate and precipitate minerals. Look for flat surfaces within the sandstone.
- Check for Manganese Staining. The presence of general black or dark brown staining on rocks in the area might indicate manganese enrichment, increasing the likelihood of finding dendritic patterns.
- Carry a Hand Lens. A hand lens (10x magnification) will help in identifying the intricate patterns and distinguishing them from organic fossils or other mineral inclusions.
