Collecting tips
- Look in High-Energy Environments. Focus your search in areas where water or ice has transported and deposited sediment, such as riverbanks, lake shores, and coastal areas.
- Examine Sedimentary Layers. In geological outcrops, look for distinct layers of coarse-grained sediment, which may indicate ancient pebble deposits (conglomerates).
- Check for Rounding. True pebbles are characterized by their rounded or sub-rounded shape, indicating significant transport and abrasion. Angular fragments of similar size are typically gravel or breccia clasts.
- Consider Source Rock Geology. The composition of pebbles can provide clues about the geology of the upstream or upslope source area. Look for pebbles composed of resistant minerals like quartz, or distinctive rock types from nearby formations.
