1. Look for Outcrops. Exposed limestone bedrock in road cuts, quarries, stream beds, and coastal cliffs are prime locations. Chert nodules often weather out of the softer limestone matrix and can be found as float.
2. Acid Test. Carry a small bottle of dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl). Limestone will effervesce vigorously, while chert will not react. This is a definitive test to distinguish the two components.
3. Hardness Test. Chert is significantly harder than limestone. Chert will scratch steel and glass (Mohs hardness 7), while limestone (calcite, Mohs hardness 3) will not.
4. Examine Weathered Surfaces. Differential weathering often highlights the nodules, as the softer limestone erodes more quickly, leaving the harder chert nodules protruding or lying loose on the surface.
5. Look for Conchoidal Fracture. Broken chert will exhibit a characteristic conchoidal (shell-like) fracture, which is a key identifying feature.
