Serpentine occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Where to find Serpentine

California, USA

Extensive serpentinite belts, particularly in the Coast Ranges and Sierra Nevada foothills, forming the state rock of California. Often associated with Franciscan Complex rocks.

Appalachian Mountains, USA/Canada

Numerous occurrences along the Appalachian orogen, often associated with ophiolite fragments.

Cyprus

Part of the Troodos Ophiolite, a classic example of oceanic crust and upper mantle.

Oman

Part of the Semail Ophiolite, one of the best-preserved ophiolite sequences globally.

Italy

Used extensively as a decorative stone ('verde antico') from ancient times, particularly in the Alps and Apennines.

New Zealand

Significant occurrences, particularly in the South Island, often associated with tectonic boundaries.

Collecting tips

  1. Look for Ultramafic Associations. Serpentinite forms from ultramafic rocks. Look for areas mapped as ophiolites, peridotites, or other ultramafic intrusions.
  2. Identify Green, Greasy Rocks. Its distinctive green color and greasy/waxy luster are key identifiers. It often feels smooth or slightly soapy to the touch.
  3. Check for Slickensides. Polished, striated surfaces (slickensides) are common in serpentinite due to its plastic deformation under tectonic stress.
  4. Beware of Asbestos. Many serpentinites contain asbestos minerals (chrysotile, tremolite, actinolite). Avoid disturbing or collecting fibrous varieties without proper safety precautions. Do not cut, grind, or sand serpentinite without appropriate respiratory protection and ventilation.
  5. Geological Maps. Consult geological maps for areas known to contain serpentinite or ophiolite complexes.
