Where to find Serpentinite
California, USA
Extensive serpentinite belts, particularly in the Coast Ranges and Sierra Nevada foothills, often associated with ophiolite sequences. It is the state rock of California.
Appalachian Mountains, USA/Canada
Occurs in various localities, particularly in Newfoundland, Quebec, Vermont, and North Carolina, as part of ancient oceanic crust obducted onto the continental margin.
Oman
The Semail Ophiolite in Oman is one of the best-preserved and most studied ophiolite complexes globally, with vast exposures of serpentinite.
Alps, Europe
Found in numerous locations throughout the Alpine chain, representing remnants of the Tethys Ocean floor.
Urals, Russia
Significant occurrences within the Ural Mountains, associated with ophiolitic belts.
Collecting tips
- Look for Ophiolite Sequences. Serpentinite is a key component of ophiolites, which are slices of oceanic crust and upper mantle thrust onto continental margins. Look for geological maps indicating ophiolite complexes.
- Identify Associated Minerals. Serpentinite often occurs with chromite, magnetite, talc, and sometimes asbestos minerals. The presence of these can be an indicator.
- Check for Greasy Luster and Smooth Feel. The characteristic greasy or waxy luster and smooth, sometimes slippery feel are good field indicators.
- Observe Color and Mottling. The distinctive green colors, often with dark mottling or veining, are highly characteristic.
- Test Hardness. Serpentinite is relatively soft (Mohs 2.5-4), so it can be scratched with a knife or even a copper coin in some cases.
- Safety Precautions. Be aware that some serpentinite contains asbestos (chrysotile). Avoid disturbing or breaking fibrous varieties, and do not inhale dust. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when collecting or handling, especially if there's a risk of dust generation.
