Where to find Iron-rich Shale
Precambrian Shields
Many ancient cratonic areas globally, where Banded Iron Formations (BIFs) are found, often contain associated iron-rich shales. Examples include the Superior Craton (Canada, USA), Pilbara Craton (Australia), and Kaapvaal Craton (South Africa).
Appalachian Basin, USA
Various Paleozoic formations, particularly Devonian and Mississippian shales, can be iron-rich, contributing to the characteristic red and brown colors of some units.
Western Europe (e.g., UK, France, Germany)
Mesozoic and Paleozoic sedimentary basins often contain iron-rich shales, sometimes associated with coal measures or marine sequences.
China
Extensive sedimentary basins, particularly those with ancient marine or lacustrine deposits, host significant occurrences of iron-rich shales.
Collecting tips
- Look for Fissility. Shale's defining characteristic is its ability to split into thin layers. Iron-rich varieties will also exhibit this.
- Observe Color. Reddish, purplish, or dark brown hues are strong indicators of iron content. A streak test can confirm the presence of iron oxides (red-brown streak).
- Check for Associated Minerals. Look for evidence of iron concretions, nodules, or layers of iron oxides (hematite, goethite) or carbonates (siderite) within the shale.
- Examine Depositional Environment. Iron-rich shales are typically found in low-energy sedimentary environments, often associated with other fine-grained sediments, limestones, or even coal seams.
Quick Check
- Color:
- Reddish-brown, purplish-red, dark gray to black
- Luster:
- Dull to earthy
- Streak:
- Reddish-brown (for hematitic varieties), gray to black (for organic-rich or pyritic varieties)
