Shale with Quartz Veins occurs in specific geological environments. Knowing where to look, and in what kind of rock, is the difference between going home empty-handed and finding a great specimen.

Where to find Shale with Quartz Veins

Appalachian Basin, USA

Extensive shale formations (e.g., Marcellus Shale, Utica Shale) often exhibit quartz veins, particularly in areas affected by the Appalachian Orogeny.

Rocky Mountains, USA/Canada

Shale units within various sedimentary basins show quartz veining due to tectonic activity and fluid migration associated with mountain building.

European Sedimentary Basins

Numerous shale formations across Europe, such as those in the Paris Basin or North Sea, can contain quartz veins, especially near structural features.

Australian Basins

Sedimentary basins in Australia, including those with significant hydrocarbon potential, often feature shales with quartz veining.

Collecting tips

  1. Look for Outcrops. Examine road cuts, stream beds, and coastal cliffs where sedimentary rock layers are exposed. Shales are often recessive (weather more easily) but the quartz veins may stand out.
  2. Identify Fissility. Shale typically breaks into thin, platy fragments. Look for these characteristic breaks, and then observe if they are cut by lighter-colored, harder veins.
  3. Check for Hardness Contrast. The quartz veins will be significantly harder (Mohs 7) than the surrounding shale (Mohs 2.5-4). A steel knife or geological hammer can be used to test this difference.
  4. Observe Vein Morphology. Note the orientation, thickness, and interconnectedness of the veins. They can be parallel to bedding, perpendicular, or form complex networks.

Quick Check

Color:
Dark (shale) with white/clear (quartz veins)
Luster:
Dull/earthy (shale) with vitreous/greasy (quartz veins)
Streak:
White to light gray (shale, if tested on unweathered surface); White (quartz)
